Project Description:

The summer research project includes the following three specific objectives to search for an advanced utilization of existing surface infrastructure and to enhance the overall operational and safety performance of traffic along selected arterials and freeways in GTHA.

1.      Develop a micro-level simulation model (PTV VISSIM) to evaluate the suitability of introducing an intelligent lane utilization (ILU) program for the selected arterials/freeways in Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA)

2.      Assess the traffic flow impact for different segments and lengths of ILUs; i.e., the impact of ILUs is likely to be affected by the choice of the particular start- and end-points of highway segments, and

3.      Produce a technical report with the result of ILU analysis to understand the operational and safety gains and/or losses of different ILU configurations for arterials/freeways

Duties and Responsibilities of the student:

1.      Develop microsimulation model using VISSIM for selected arterials and highways in GTHA

2.      Analyze the operational performance of surface infrastructure focusing on an  advanced lane use called intelligent lane utilization (ILU)

3.      Evaluate the operational performance (ILU) using various traffic parameters

4.      Produce a report summarizing the research outcomes and recommendations

Skills and Qualifications:

Fundamental knowledge in transportation engineering and traffic flow theory

(Interpersonal Skills)

Time-management and punctuation, excellent technical report writing skill

Any microsimulation tool experience; strong enthusiasm in transportation engineering

Degrees, courses and Disciplines prerequisite*:  CIVL 3250 or equivalent
